Every 15 Minutes

This year it is expected that more than 10,000 people will die in a car accident that involves an individual with a blood alcohol content over the legal limit of .08 percent. More than that will be injured in these accidents; some walking away with minor injuries, while some are debilitated permanently. Many organizations have been developed to battle this issue and raise awareness of the widespread problem. Groups have banded together with a common cause of doing what they can to prevent further injuries or fatalities from occurring to those involved in an accident. Many cases occur among younger individuals including teens that are under the legal drinking age. One program that has been used to further the understanding of the issue of drunk driving primarily among younger people is the Every 15 Minutes Program. The program is implemented on school campuses with the assistance of many important figures including the Fire Department, Police, school staff, District Attorney's office and others.

The first day consists of a person dressed up as the Grim Reaper coming into a classroom and calling out one of the students. This is used to symbolize the person that died as a result of a drunk driving accident. About one person dies every 15 minutes in the United States so the program uses this as its main focus. Every fifteen minutes another student is taken from a class. Once they are removed, an officer will step into the class and read an obituary that has been written by the students of the parent including how their child died. The student is painted in makeup and for the rest of the day is unable to speak to anyone. This is to show the dead walking amongst them and help students understand the reality of how those that they have sat with in school every day can easily be taken away. In addition, the parents of the student will be sent a face death notification that mimics what they would receive in the event their child really was killed in an accident.

Following lunch a mock traffic collision is set up outside of school so that students can see the severity that can be involved in a crash. Their peers will be the actors in the event and will be painted to portray the wounds they could receive. As in a real accident paramedics and fire fighters will arrive on the scene and cut the students out of the wreck with the Jaws of Life before placing them on a stretcher and taking them to the hospital to be treated. The driver that was intoxicated will also be taken to jail and booked. The students that took place in the program will in addition have the chance to visit the emergency room, the police station and the morgue. They will spend the night away from their family with the other students at a hotel, demonstrating the removal from family that occurs when a child is killed.

The parents and students will write letters as if the accident really did occur. These letters are read the following day in a school wide assembly to reflect on the event. This is not the only program that uses a simulated event to portray the effects of drunk driving. There are many organizations, including involvement from police officers that are implemented to have an impact. They use means such as simulating accidents, using virtual programs to show how difficult it is to drive while impaired and more. Additional tactics used to deter people from drinking and driving involves direct influence from law enforcement that imposes high penalties for those caught. In an instance where an accident occurs that results in a death, the charges will be substantially increased.
