5 Steps to take after a DUI Arrest

Being arrested for DUI (driving under the influence) is not something to take lightly—especially since such an arrest can lead to serious and lasting penalties. After a DUI arrest, there are a number of steps you can take in order to ensure that your rights and future are safeguarded.

  1. Get legal help! Whether you are a first time or a multiple time DUI offender, it is essential to seek legal counsel as soon as possible. Every state implements a different set of laws and penalties for DUI, and it is helpful to be familiar with what you're dealing with. By hiring a DUI attorney, you could be increasing your chances of having your charges dropped or eliminated.
  2. Show up to court. In order to avoid any additional trouble with the law, it is crucial that you report to court on the date you are summoned. Most states require that DUI offenders appear in court within the first 30 days of their arrest.
  3. Carry out your punishment. After your arrest, you may receive a number of punishments including steep fines, mandatory alcohol and/ or drug classes, suspension of your driver's license, and jail time. To get your license back as soon as possible, make sure you carry out and abide by the terms set forth by your punishment.
  4. Always have the proper insurance. After a DUI, your insurance company may terminate your policy. There will be a minimum of three years during which it is mandatory for you to carry your insurance and the SR-22 form (proof that you have the proper amount of insurance).
  5. Become a licensed driver again! After you are arrested, your driver's license will most likely be suspended. Once your suspension is up, you may be able to get a temporary or restricted license, which enables you to go to work and the alcohol and/ or drug classes you might be required to enroll in. To get your license back, you'll have to pay all fees, and prove that you've finished or are on the way to completing your punishment and that you have proper insurance.

Although the criminal justice system can be complex and intimidating, you do not have to face it alone. To find out more about the steps you can take after a DUI arrest, do not hesitate to contact a DUI attorney today.
