Field Sobriety Tests

Field sobriety tests are those tests which are conducted by law enforcement after he/she has pulled a driver over for suspected DUI, DWI or OUI. These tests are mainly used to determine the driver's coordination and ability to follow directions, and are mainly used in DUI and DWI cases to prove that a driver's abilities are impaired.

While there are a number of types of field sobriety tests, and specific tests will vary depending upon the state, there are three tests which are most commonly used throughout the U.S. These include:

  • Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus: follow an object or light with the eyes.
  • Walk and Turn: walk 9 paces, heel to toe, in one direction; turn and walk the other way.
  • One Leg Stand: stand on one leg, with the other raised approximately 6 to 12 inches off the ground.
