Connecticut Parents Arrested for DUI with Child in Car

In South Windsor, Connecticut, police are reporting that they recently arrested a mother and a father who were driving under the influence (DUI) while their four year old child was in the car.

According to Connecticut law enforcement agencies, officers were called to Rye Street at 3 AM this past Sunday and were told there had been a car accident.  When police arrived at the scene, they saw that 54 year old Michael Smith had crashed into a utility pole.  46 year old Mary Smith was also in the vehicle when Mr. Smith crashed and so was the couple's four year old child.

After examining the scene, police asked Mr. Smith to perform a series of field sobriety tests and then determined that the man had been driving under the influence.  He was charged with DU, risk of injury to a minor and failure to drive in the proper lane.

Shortly after the accident, Mary Smith was released and she walked home with her young child only to return in a car to be with her husband.  Again, the child was placed in the couple's car, only for police to find that Mrs. Smith was also intoxicated.  She was charged with DUI and risk of injury to a minor.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Smith are expected to appear in court on April 16th.
