State's DUI Backlog to be Cleared

A State Chief Justice of one Southern state has ordered that the state's backlog of drunk driving cases be cleared as quickly as possible. As a result more than 11,000 backlogged drunk driving cases have been disposed of over the last four months. The Justice's order came as a result of too many new drunk driving arrests piling up on top of the inordinate number of old cases that have yet to be settled. Some of the backlogged DUI cases regard offenses from more than a decade ago.

State troopers in the area complained that their frequent trips to court rooms have caused them delays and kept them off the highway, resulting in less safety on state roads. Despite the number of backlogged cases that have been disposed of, about 9,000 more cases remain.

The addition of new cases to that number brings the total to 14,000 pending DUI cases statewide, and that number does not include figures from 77 municipal courts that are not part of the online state database for court cases. The Chief Justice attributed the backlog to scheduling conflicts among other factors.
