Bicyclists Injured In Suspected Drunk Driving Accident

Driver Collides With Group In Park
In a brutal collision early Thursday morning, a driver crashed into a parked group of cyclists who were standing in and near the road, sending nine people to the hospital, reports ABC 7 News.
The night had been planned by an organization called the Midnight Ridazz, a group of likeminded cycling enthusiasts who put together events wherein the members meet and ride together, often late at night. The incident is alleged to have occurred at around 2 a.m. at West Jefferson Place, near the 5900 block, in Baldwin Village. According to witness testimony, the cyclists were standing together in a compact group waiting for more of their friends to arrive just below the scenic overlook. A vehicle, driven by a 27-year old woman, came barreling along and plowed into the group without slowing or attempting to swerve away.
Witnesses told reporters that the force of the crash sent people flying.
“It was as simple as a bowling ball knocking out a few pins,” one witness remarked.
9 Victims Hospitalized After Incident
The driver told law enforcement officers that she had taken her eyes off the road to look down at her phone at the time of the accident. She was arrested by police on suspicion of DUI, although no comment was made by authorities as to her blood alcohol content.
Of the eleven people hurt in the collision, nine were taken to the hospital for treatment, with one male victim in critical condition. Witnesses said that he had been launched into the air during the crash, and landed on the windshield of the car with enough force to shatter it.
Police are still investigating the incident.
