High Speed Chase Ends In Foot Pursuit By Law Enforcement Officers

After sheriff's deputies chased a reckless and suspected intoxicated driver, they finally caught him with the help of a trained canine operative, who tackled the alleged DUI offender to the ground.

The incident began, according to a police report filed shortly after the arrest, in the early morning on August 11th. The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department began to receive reports at 2:20 a.m. from eyewitnesses that a motorist was behaving erratically, driving recklessly in Lynnwood, near Alameda Street and Imperia Highway. Deputies were mobilized in pursuit of the suspect, who was reported as driving a blue compact car.

Police Cordon Off Los Angeles Neighborhood After Suspect Flees Vehicle

Once officers with the sheriff's department located the motorist, they attempted to pull the suspect over. He chose not to comply, initiating a high-speed pursuit through the streets of southern Los Angeles.

According to a statement released by Lieutenant Victor Clay, an officer with the department, the suspect eluded capture in his car for 20 minutes, driving at speeds as high as 70 or 80 miles per hour. The motorist weaved through small neighborhood streets, running multiple stop signs and even at certain points driving on the wrong side of the road into the path of oncoming traffic in his efforts to evade capture.

Eventually, the driver came to a halt at the intersection of Hooper Avenue and 84th Place, leaping from his vehicle and fleeing on foot. Law enforcement officers began to cordon off the area, isolating the neighborhood and beginning an extensive search.

Clay told reporters that the hunt finally ended at around 4:00 a.m., thanks to the efforts of a trained canine in the employ of the sheriff's office. The dog discovered the suspect hiding in a backyard in the 1200 block of 84th Place, then leapt upon the man and overpowered him. Police are awaiting the results of a blood alcohol content test to determine if the driver was intoxicated at the time of the offense.
