Minnesota DWI Facts and Overview

By Ramsay Law Firm, PLLC  Feb. 27, 2013 3:20p

According to the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), in the state of Minnesota close to 30,000 individuals were arrested for driving while impaired from alcohol and or drugs in 2011. Of these DWI cases, 76 percent resulted in criminal convictions. Out of the 368 people who died in traffic accidents 111 involved drunk drivers. Of those who were arrested on DWI, 41 percent were repeat offenders and 7 percent were drivers less than 21 years old. One out seven drivers in the state has been charged with DWI. Those most likely to violate DWI laws are male drivers between the ages of 20 and 34, who account for 55 percent of impaired driving arrests.

In its annual report regarding impaired driving, the OTS reports that current practice in the state keeps an impaired driving violation permanently on one's driving record. Impaired driving may be the result of alcohol consumption or any type of chemical substance, even those legitimately prescribed by a doctor. These substances include illegal drugs such as cocaine or methamphetamines, opiates such as codeine, and Vicodin, and stimulants such as Dexedrine and Ritalin. While many prescription drugs and even over-the-counter drugs warn against driving pursuant to taking them, many do not. If the drug ingested causes impairment that is discernible to law enforcement, you may be charged with an impaired driving violation even when taking only the prescribed amount.
