Have You Been Charged With a BUI?

By Thomas & Paulk  Aug. 4, 2010 10:40a

A very popular form of recreation in the Tampa Florida and nearby areas is boating and sometimes people can forget that their responsibilities are just as high when operating a boat as when they are driving a car. Though there is generally much more traffic and congestion to deal with when driving a car, accidents can happen in the water just as easily, especially if one is impaired by alcohol or drugs.

In the state of Florida, it is illegal to operate a boat while under the influence; this applies to any other type of watercraft as well. If your blood alcohol level is discovered to be at the level of 0.08% or higher, you are considered to be too intoxicated to be driving. If you happen to be under the age of 21, you can be arrested if your blood alcohol level is higher than 0.02%. A person's perceptions, response time and ability decrease at these points and judgment becomes impaired. Coordination, vision, and alertness can all be affected and this can lead to accidents and mistakes which could involve seriously injuring oneself and others. Unpredictability of the ocean or water environment can also add complexities to the operation of a boat such as wave movement, wind factor, and even changes in the underwater terrain.
