Rise in DUI Arrest in California Over Holiday Weekend

A statement issued by the California Highway Patrol this week discussed the rise in drunk driving over this past weekend compared to last year's Independence Day festivities.

According to the CHP, officers arrested 67 people between Friday night and Saturday morning, which is ten more than the department arrested last year. However, there was some good news in the report: this year, like, last, there were no drunk driving-related fatalities reported.

In Santa Rose alone officers detained 13 individuals for drunk driving, while 17 DUI arrests were made in Santa Clara County by a total of 15 law enforcement agencies. Both of these figures were high when compared to not only the average Friday night, but to last year's figures as well. Across California DUI arrests are on the rise: in 2010, 396 arrests were made; this year, 442 drivers were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
