9 Year Old Dies during DUI Accident

A father is still reeling over the death of his 9-year-old son while recovering from his own injuries that are a result of a DUI accident.

Joey Kelley, 32, was brought to the AnMed Health Medical Center in serious condition after the car he was driving was involved in a crash on Liberty Highway. According to hospital spokeswoman Heidi Charalambous he was admitted to the neuroscience intensive care unit on Sunday. His son was airlifted to the Greenville Memorial Hospital and later passed away at 2 a.m.

It appears that the Jeep driven by Kelley crossed the center line and was struck by a Suburban on the other side of the road. The Jeep then flipped into an embankment, ejecting Kelley and his son, Keelan, as a result.

At this time the South Carolina Highway Patrol officers involved with this accident believe that alcohol was a contributing factor to the DUI crash. Spokesman Cpl. Bill Rhyne commented that charges are pending against Kelley. The 10th Circuit Solicitor's Office and the SCHP will determine what these charges should be and when they will be issued.
