20 Arrested at DUI Checkpoint

A checkpoint in the East Village kept officers busy last Friday night. In total, 20 people were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The checkpoint was set up in a busy area of the city that is known to have a high incidence of drunk drivers. Beginning at 10:25 PM, officers screened drivers coming through the checkpoint. While most were let go with just a wave of the hand, those that appeared to be under the influence were detained. In addition to the arrests, 19 vehicles were impounded. Of all the cars that went through the checkpoint, just 40 people were given sobriety tests; half of them failed and were given a free ride to jail.
