Man with Multiple DWIs Sentenced to Life in Prison

A San Antonio man put his fate in the hands of the jury after pleading guilty to murder in a case concerning a fatal drunk driving accident. A.N., 37 years old, already had three DWI convictions on his record when he was charged with felony murder after a severe two-car crash that happened on Labor Day Weekend two years ago. A.N. was driving his pickup truck west on U.S. 181 that afternoon when he allegedly ran a red light and crashed full speed into the passenger side of a Honda sedan. The sedan was being driven by 47-year-old R.C. (there were no other occupants) who was traveling north and reportedly had right of way on the intersecting roadway. The passenger side of the sedan was completely destroyed and practically unrecognizable according to prosecutors. R.C. suffered severe injuries and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. He died later that day. A.N. received minor injuries in the wreck and was also taken to the hospital for medical care. Emergency responders said that he was belligerent to medical personnel and was found to have a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.246 percent—three times the legal limit—an hour and a half after the accident. Blood tests also came back showing that the man had cocaine in his system. He was arrested after his release from the hospital. Because of his previous DWI record, he was charged with murder rather than intoxication manslaughter. He has no non-DWI related criminal charges on his record and faced the possibility of five years to life behind bars. The jury decided to hand down a life sentence. He may not be eligible for parole for 30 years. Make sure you have an experienced criminal defense attorney knowledgeable in DWI law if you are facing drunk driving charges.
