United Pilot Charged with DUI

On November 10th, a United Airlines pilot was officially charged with driving under the influence (DUI) while on the job.  The pilot, 51 year old Erwin Vermont Washington, was scheduled to fly a flight from London Heathrow Airport to Chicago when police charged him with DUI.

According to police, Washington's blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was well over the legal limit.  They say that he had too much alcohol in his system to legally work as a member of the airline's aviation staff.

Washington was pulled from United Airlines Flight 949 prior to take off from Heathrow Airport on Monday at noon.  Police became involved after one of his co-workers became suspicious and told authorities that Washington might be drunk.

After the incident, the flight was cancelled.  124 passengers who were Chicago bound were placed on other United Airlines' flights.

Washington is scheduled to appear in court on November 20, 2009.
