P.L. was driving a 2006 sedan in the early morning hours when the fatal crash happened. The 24-year-old man had a total of seven passengers in his car, several of which were not wearing seatbelts and some were sitting on the laps of other passengers. According to Illinois State Police accident reports, P.L. hit two cars while traveling northbound on a Chicago area freeway. He then lost control of his vehicle and slammed into a barrier which sent the car careening into two other cars. Another car attempted to avoid hitting the ricocheting vehicles hit a wall after trying to veer off onto an off-ramp. A 23-year-old female passenger that had been seated behind P.L. in the back seat received severe injuries in the wreck. She, along with others who had been injured, was rushed to a nearby hospital but did not survive her injuries. She was pronounced dead about two hours after the accident occurred.
