DUI Crash Ends in Death of Newlyweds and Newborn Child

A story made headlines earlier this week when a DUI driver crashed into another vehicle, killing the newlywed couple inside and their unborn baby. According to Fox News, the DUI driver was speeding down a street in Brooklyn, New York and was clocked at twice the recommended speed limit. The driver was later identified as a previous DUI offender named Julio Acevedo and he was driving a BMW that was not his at the time of the crash.

The accident, which took place last Sunday, resulted in the almost immediate deaths of Nachman and Raizy Glauber, who were both only 21 and newly married. Raizy was pregnant with her first son, and she was transported to the hospital immediately after the accident where doctors tried to rescue the child. The baby was delivered by C-section while the mother was already dead. Unfortunately, doctors were not able to save the child and he died Monday morning.

Just last month, the Acevedo was charged on driving under the influence and this case is still pending in court. In the 1990’s, he also served a sentence for manslaughter that lasted almost 10 years. The couple was a part of a large ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn, and the entire community came together to mourn the death of this small family. At the time of the accident, Nachman and Raizy were on their way to the hospital because the pregnant mother was not feeling well. The livery cab that they hired allegedly passed a stop sign, and investigators still have not determined whether or not the driver stopped. Regardless, the speeding BMW plowed into the cab, killing the passengers immediately.

The driver sped off in a hit-and-run accident. Failing to even stop and determine whether or not the victims in the car were all right. The driver of the cab was not seriously hurt but was knocked in unconscious. One investigation the state determined that the Toyota that was not licensed to act as a livery vehicle and should not have been sent to pick up the couple in the first place. The Orthodox Jewish community says that they want to see Acevedo charged with a triple homicide for the deaths of the couple and the infant. Now that he has been caught and arrested, police are trying to figure out how Acevedo got a hold of the BMW that he was driving.

The registered owner of the BMW was already arrested on insurance fraud charges Sunday in a scam that involved the car but she was not involved in the crash. Supposedly she rented the car out to drivers for a small fee. Like Acevedo, maybe you facilitated a multiple-vehicle accident. If you have previous DUI’s on your record, or were intoxicated at the time of the crash, then you may be charged with a felony DUI manslaughter. In some cases, this can lead to up to a decade in prison. You may also be charged with other crimes if you violated a license suspension, drove a car that was not yours, or were speeding at the time of the accident.

You will want a DUI attorney on your side if you have been charged with any sort of DUI accident including manslaughter or a hit-and-run. Depending on your situation, there may be a possibility that you could get our case dismissed. For example, if this driver hit the car because the cab driver ran a stop sign, then he may not deserve to be charged for manslaughter as it would have been difficult for him to avoid an accident.
